The Department of Political Science at the University of Northern Iowa offers a number of unique undergraduate programs taught by nationally and internationally known scholars. Students in our department are interested in how governments are structured, how they should be structured, what policies they adopt, how power is distributed and what motivates political behavior. We offer a wide variety of courses in American politics, public administration, comparative politics, international relations and political theory. These courses emphasize critical thinking, oral communication, writing and research skills.
Besides a political science major, we also offer two unique undergraduate programs. The interdisciplinary political communication degree is designed for those interested in the creation, dissemination and effects of political information. Public administration students study management, policies and decision-making in the public, nonprofit and private sectors.
Students wishing to transfer into majors in the Department of Political Science should talk with the department head regarding courses and making the transition to UNI.
BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
The department's internship program provides opportunities for students to gain experience as well as practical knowledge about politics and public administration. Internship experiences enable students to discover perspectives that can go beyond academic courses. Students meet with the department's internship coordinator to discuss internship possibilities at the local, state or federal level. In addition, internships may be done in nonprofit or electoral settings.
Students can participate in organizations such as the Pre-Law Club, the Political Science Society and Pi Sigma Alpha (national political science honor society). In addition, our students are often active in the Northern Iowa Student Government and political organizations on campus.
Go beyond the classroom
Students can engage in learning outside the classroom, through study abroad opportunities or individualized research with faculty. These opportunities allow students to employ the knowledge and research skills they have gained in their coursework. Study globalization in Brazil. Do a research project on the Iowa caucuses. Our students do these things, and many more.
